I stumbled upon this lovely piece of rational thought and air tight argumentation when perusing the website of Fred Phelps, pastor and owner of www.godhatesfags.com
Guys like this are the reason why 75% of my ministry is spent doing damage control.

When kdny would roll-up to KU-Lawrence a good chunk of my time was spent with this character. I don't feel like perusing his page, but I remember some of his historical madness about Calvinism, etc. I will say, despite his wickedness, he opened plenty of opportunities with gays and lesbians, especially the later, due to his rhetoric. I will never forget my interaction with a girl contemplating lesbian vs. following Jesus Christ. Truly amazing and sad. Unfortunately, I never heard from her again, despite pleas to the contrary. God is working all things to the good, including evil men that work in his name. At the end of the day, I am convinced that many sinners merely use them as an excuse & I wish they weren't around, but it's the reality of dealing with people who hate God.
I remember reading a good chunk of his stuff several years ago, and he, at the very least, is a terrible historian, and I just assumed his theology followed those lies.
On a sports discussion board, of all places, I had a fairly civil debate on whether pastors should be paid--this sounds like someone who says they shouldn't and goes to ridiculous extremes.
Some people can't be taught.
HAHAHAHA! I just clicked on the link. What a character!
As in most things, there is an element of truth in the madness.
ALC,
You ask a very good question. Complex as well. For a more full treatment of the issue, check out a sermon I recently preached on that very topic at www.gracecentral.org
The title of the sermon: Is It Okay To Be Gay?
So, go to the website and click on the sermon title and you'll get a quicktime file of the message. You must turn your speakers way way up or burn it to cd and listen on a stereo or with headphones. We were having some recording volume level issues which have since been resolved. After you listen, I'd welcome your feedback. Also, if you don;t have the capabilities to download the audio files, I can burn a cd and mail it to you if you're comfortable giving out your address.
I hope you don't think I'm blowing you off by pointing you in this direction, it's just that there's so much I'd like to say about the question which is more adequately addressed there.
Peace,
Greg
